چکیده

The Turing Test is one of the most disputed topics in arti cial intel ligence philosophy of mind and cognitive science This paper is a review of the past years of the Turing Test Philosophical debates practical developments and repercussions in related disciplines are all covered We discuss Turing s ideas in detail and present the important comments that have been made on them Within this context behaviorism consciousness the other minds problem and similar topics in the philosophy of mind are discussed We also cover the sociological and psychological aspects of the Turing Test Finally we look at the current situation and analyze the programs that have been developed with the aim of passing the Turing Test We conclude that the Turing Test has been and will continue to be an in uential and controversial topic

On the notion of universality of Turing machine

Several years later, A. Minsky showed a simple example of UTM: (M5) There is a UTM having 6 states and 7 symbols. Recently, S. Watanabe (University of Tokyo) demonstrated an extremely simple machine which is also universal in a sense. (W6) There is a UTM having 3 states and 7 symbols.* It seems strange, however, that there is no general definition of the notion of universality: these scholars u...

What Question Would Turing Pose Today?

gence,” which appeared in the journal Mind in October 1950, Alan Turing proposes to replace the philosophical question “Can machines think?” with an operational, behavioral one. The question of whether machines could think was on many people’s minds even in the infancy of computing machines.1 To avoid the need to define intelligence or thinking, terms that he uses interchangeably, Turing asks w...

Circuit Constructing Turing Machines

Circuits are useful alternate characterization of computation that fundamentally differ from Turing machines in that, the former is a uniform model of computation whereas the later is not. This is quite serious a drawback of circuits since a circuit family might consist of members that radically differ from each other and hence impossible to implement in practice. On the other hand, Turing mach...

Bayesian perspective over time

Thomas Bayes, the founder of Bayesian vision, entered the University of Edinburgh in 1719 to study logic and theology. Returning in 1722, he worked with his father in a small church. He also was a mathematician and in 1740 he made a novel discovery which he never published, but his friend Richard Price found it in his notes after his death in 1761, reedited it and published it. But until L...

Is the Turing Test Still Relevant? A Plan for Developing the Cognitive Decathlon to Test Intelligent Embodied Behavior

The field of artificial intelligence has long surpassed the notion of verbal intelligence envisioned by Turing (1950). Consequently, the Turing Test is primarily viewed as a philosopher’s debate or a publicity stunt, and has little relevance to AI researchers. This paper describes the motivation and design of a set of behavioral tests called the Cognitive Decathlon, which were developed to be a...
